[Lollapalooza Review] Paul McCartney not an EDM fan, Travis Scott gets busted & Lolla battles the rain!

When the dust settled, we were there… Wristbands gripped tight while shoulder to shoulder with our fellow music lover– Another year of Lollapalooza comes and goes..

Even with the mighty confidence to battle a storm… This year’s Lollapalooza was a bit watered down.   A long walk down Columbus Avenue, we stroll and sift through waves of teenagers in crop tops & mom jeans.  Lolla has grown up over the past few years… and despite the rain evacuation on Day 3 (Sunday) was still able to keep the music going.

Security is tight – and made itself apparent when rapper, Travis Scott decided it was a good idea to tell the crowd to stop listening to the front stage security and bust through the barricades.  Refusing to play by the rules, Travis was taken off stage by the event security…solely securing himself as the most punk rock artist at the festival.  But there were many other memorable moments which lent themselves to a exciting and unpredictable music fest–

Day one, I make my way to see the up and coming band, BORNS, which puts on a display of their newer tracks as well as bring the crowd to a noisy dance party with their radio hit, Electric Love.

The heat is now a struggle… and let’s just say jeans were a bad choice.

The EDM stage was on fire with youth…The amount of people is imaginable pushing upwards of 100,000 people in a one mile radius.  Everyone is dawning their nicest summer threads.  Being the old man that I am (at 29 years old) I found myself needing constant water & shade breaks.  As the hours passed the time had finally come for the bell of the ball and arguably the most anticipated Lolla-artist… Paul McCartney.

If there’s one thing said about Paul McCartney, he is the definition of a living legend. The closest thing to music sainthood, witnessing Paul is almost a religious experience.  And thus my favorite part of Lolla this year.  And just when you thought things couldn’t get any better Sir Paul spoke the most memorable line of Lollapalooza — while being overwhelmed by the wealth of bass music that was filling the air from the EDM stage adjacent to the headlining stage…

“I planned this. It’s like a mashup between me and whatever s*** they’re playing over there…”

Obviously, the Beatle didn’t have any time to deal with robot noise overwhelming the art he was crafting on stage… I must admit it was quite strange seeing Paul perform songs I’ve seen covered by bands over the years – the nostalgia made the songs almost not seem real… Like, ohhh yea… Paul actually WROTE “Hey Jude”!

Being a first time attendee at Chicago’s Lollapalooza I wasn’t quite sure what to expect.  As opposed to other music festivals like SXSW and Riot Fest – Lolla seems like the kind ‘old neighbor of the festivals… including everyone and hopefully everyone gets along…  What will next year bring?  Just ask Perry.
